People are from Mars… Conservationists are from Venus May 7, 2010

Could this be the end for our weekly glossies!?

The Green Drinks evening was a very interesting one indeed! I do confess that I had presumptions about the evening being a drag, topics which were outdated being discussed and filled with individuals pressuring others to get “green” or die.

On the contrary, the Big Green Book founders, a representative of the Venus Project and a representative fr0m the NHS made great guests and brought up various thought-provoking topics which affect the Conservation community.Although, a huge number of people had cancelled last minute, these few who had turned up were extremely friendly and a student journalist from BCU such as myself fitted right in.

Amongst all the talk about the rise of technology and whether or not it could replace humans in various careers and the story behind the brand Big Green Book, a specific Conservation topic intrigued me the most.A representative from the Venus Project, presented me with the curious lifestyle vision which they believe in.

The Venus Project, which originally started off in California, offers to rid us of our current monetary system and media tools such as advertising.

“Money has outplayed it’s role on this planet”

Why, I hear you ask?  According to members of the Venus Project, we need to change our economy into a resource-based economy and rid ourselves of media tools such as billboards, adverts and magazines as these things only poison the landscape and our perceptions.

The Venus project prides themselves on wanting to live in a world that leaves poverty, politics and war behind and re-instate good human values and better our lifestyles. Sounds great, but I can already hear the moans of technology-dependent society asking themselves why they would want to resort to living like those did in the Stone Age.

Conservation you say? What is that?

As an online journalist for Birmingham Recycled, let me have the privilege of introducing you to our beloved topic of Conservation. I will ensure to keep this blog steaming with hot news from the conservation world and full of quirky questions to ponder on concerning our duty to the environment and pretty much everything around us!

Conservation is the practice of caring for and maintaining the wealth of the natural environment which surrounds us. This includes natural habitats and the various life forms on our beautiful planet. Conservation also focuses on energy conservation which also plays an essential part in maintaining this natural balance. So, whether you are already a dedicated conservationist or have just fallen in love with Conservation, this blog is one to keep an eye on for all the latest news on this topic.

See you soon!

Party in the Park!! March 3, 2010

Fifteen hours to go…

While most of you will be getting into your cosy beds and nodding straight off to sleep, I will be fighting off the excitement which tommorow brings. Tommorow morning, will be the host of  the eagerly-awaited “Be a Voice In The Park” adventure walk.

This is most certainly a chance to do something exciting in the warm spring air with members of your local community. I shall be joining a pack of eager conservationists on a re-discovery walk into Cannon Hill Park. We will be led into areas of the park which most people are unaware of and given a chance to voice our opinions on how we feel about the changing landscape of Cannon Hill Park.

This is also a great opportunity to participate in ” Amplifing The Map”. This is  a creative audio project to mark the re-opening of the Midlands Art Centre which is due to take place on the  first of  May 2010.  I shall update you on what happens on this day very shortly!

Goodnight!

Wiza
